Takayama vs Kanazawa vs Matsumoto: Choosing a Car-Free Base

Three bases compared by the trains in, the day trips you can make without a car and the buses between them, from operators' pages checked October 15–24, 2026.

The short answer
  • Pick Kanazawa if you come from Tokyo by Shinkansen: on the November 2026 timetable the Kagayaki 503 takes 2 hours 24 minutes, and Shirakawa-go is 1 hour 15 minutes away by reserved bus.
  • Pick Takayama for Shirakawa-go and Kamikochi: the bus to Shirakawa-go takes about 50 minutes, and Kamikochi is about 90 minutes away via Hirayu until the buses stop on November 15, 2026; there are no buses in winter.
  • Pick Matsumoto for Kamikochi and Hakuba, and for the train back to Tokyo; the castle is about 15 minutes on foot from the station.
My pick

Two nights in Takayama, plus Kanazawa or Matsumoto on the way in or out.

Takayama is the only one of the three with buses to both Shirakawa-go and Kamikochi.

Add Kanazawa if you arrive from Tokyo by Shinkansen, or Matsumoto if you leave toward Hakuba or Tokyo by the Azusa.

  1. 1TakayamaShirakawa-go about 50 min; Kamikochi about 90 min (to Nov 15)
  2. 2KanazawaTokyo 2 hr 24 min by Kagayaki 503; Shirakawa-go 1 hr 15 min
  3. 3MatsumotoKamikochi by train and bus; Hakuba by JR

Takayama, Kanazawa and Matsumoto are three common car-free bases for the Japanese Alps and Shirakawa-go. Kanazawa is the fastest to reach from Tokyo by train, Takayama has buses to both Shirakawa-go and Kamikochi, and Matsumoto sits on the rail line to Hakuba. This guide compares them on what you can check on the operators' pages.

For the routes between all the towns, see my Japanese Alps without a car guide.

Times and fares below come from JR, Nohi Bus, Hokutetsu, Alpico and the towns' official tourism pages, checked October 15–24, 2026. I have not stayed in these towns' lodgings and do not review them.

"—" means no direct bus or train that I could confirm on an official page. The Hida time is JR Central's. The Shinano time is for the Shinano 8 from Matsumoto to Nagoya. "Old town" means Takayama's Sanmachi area, Higashi Chaya in Kanazawa and Matsumoto Castle.

Getting there

  • Kanazawa: on the November 2026 timetable the Kagayaki 503 leaves Tokyo at 7:20 and reaches Kanazawa at 9:44, on the Hokuriku Shinkansen.
  • Matsumoto: the Azusa 5 leaves Shinjuku at 8:00 and reaches Matsumoto at 10:37, every day on the November 2026 timetable. Highway buses from Busta Shinjuku take 3 hours 12 minutes to 3 hours 53 minutes.
  • Takayama: JR Central gives about 2 hours 20 minutes from Nagoya on the Hida limited express. From Tokyo, Nohi Bus runs a highway bus from Shinjuku in about 5 hours 45 minutes, ¥8,000–¥8,500 for daytime buses.

Day trips without a car

Shirakawa-go

Takayama and Kanazawa both have buses to Shirakawa-go. From Takayama it takes about 50 minutes; from Kanazawa Station West Exit, 1 hour 15 minutes. Both fares are ¥2,800 one way, rising to ¥2,900 on December 1, 2026. Hokutetsu asks you to reserve every bus on the Kanazawa line. More is in my guide to the Shirakawa-go bus.

Kamikochi (spring to autumn)

  • From Takayama: about 90 minutes with a change at Hirayu, ¥3,000 one way or ¥5,800 return on Nohi Bus's connecting ticket. Plan to leave Kamikochi well before the last bus: the 17:30 from Kamikochi does not connect at Hirayu to the last bus to Takayama.
  • From Matsumoto: about 30 minutes by train to Shin-Shimashima, then about 65 minutes by bus. Alpico's National Park Liner from Matsumoto Bus Terminal to Kamikochi costs ¥4,600 one way on its 10:15 run.

Both companies stop the Kamikochi buses after November 15, 2026, and there is no public transport to Kamikochi in winter.

Hakuba

Matsumoto is on the JR Oito Line to Hakuba. The Azusa 38 runs from Hakuba to Matsumoto in about 1 hour 4 minutes, every day on the November 2026 timetable. From Takayama you can reach Hakuba the same day; one weekday example on the November 2026 timetables leaves Takayama at 11:50 and arrives at Hakuba at 17:47, changing at Matsumoto and Shinano-Omachi.

Moving between the bases

Route Time Fare Reservation
Takayama – Kanazawa 2 hr 15 min ¥4,200; ¥4,400 from December 1, 2026 Yes (Hokutetsu)
Takayama – Matsumoto 2 hr 33 min (timetable) ¥4,400 Yes

The Takayama – Kanazawa buses run through Shirakawa-go, 9 a day from Kanazawa between 8:10 and 16:00. If you get off at Shirakawa-go, you pay for each section and reserve each bus. Nohi Bus changes this timetable on December 1, 2026, adding direct Takayama – Kanazawa buses that do not stop at Shirakawa-go, so check the new times before you book.

On the Takayama – Matsumoto bus, every regular run on the timetable takes 2 hours 33 minutes between Takayama and Matsumoto Bus Terminal, a little longer than Nohi Bus's 2 hours 20 minutes. Buses leave Takayama at 6:50, 7:50, 11:50, 13:50, 14:50 and 16:50 on the current timetable.

Luggage

  • Takayama: coin lockers at the station cost ¥400–¥700, cash only, for up to 3 days.
  • Kanazawa: the counter in Kanazawa Station delivers bags to your lodging the same day, ¥700 a bag within Kanazawa if you hand them in by 15:00.
  • Matsumoto: there are coin lockers in six places in the station, but no left-luggage counter.
LuggageChanging base by bus? Keep the bags small

On the Shirakawa-go line, Nohi Bus says large bags may not fit in the shared hold, so a small suitcase is easier to move between bases. Kanazawa's same-day delivery covers Kanazawa, the rest of Ishikawa and Awara Onsen, not Takayama or Matsumoto.

Which base for which trip

  1. Arriving from Tokyo, a city stay first: Kanazawa, then Shirakawa-go on the way to Takayama.
  2. Shirakawa-go and Kamikochi in one trip: Takayama, for two nights or more.
  3. Kamikochi and Hakuba, leaving for Tokyo: Matsumoto.
  4. In winter: no buses run to Kamikochi, so pair Takayama or Kanazawa with Shirakawa-go, and Matsumoto with Hakuba. Nohi Bus warns that heavy snow can delay the Shirakawa-go buses by 2 hours or more; on the current timetable the last buses leave Shirakawa-go at 17:30.
