The short answer
My pick

Come from Takayama or Kanazawa by bus, and book the seat ahead.

The bus takes about 50 minutes from Takayama and 1 hour 15 minutes from Kanazawa, and Hokutetsu asks you to reserve every bus on the Kanazawa line.

Leave big suitcases at the bus terminal: Nohi Bus warns that the luggage hold on its Takayama – Shirakawa-go buses is shared and large bags may not fit.

Buses and services

Fares and times checked October 15–20, 2026. Fares rise on December 1, 2026.

Shirakawa-go is a mountain village in Gifu Prefecture, known for its gassho houses: wooden houses under steep thatched roofs. There is no railway, so without a car you arrive by bus, from Takayama, Kanazawa, Toyama or Nagoya. This guide covers why the village is worth the trip, the buses in from each city, what to do with luggage, whether to stay the night and how the seasons change the trip.

Fares, timetables and rules below come from the bus companies, the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association and Shirakawa Village, checked October 15–20, 2026. Bus fares from Takayama and Kanazawa rise on December 1, 2026, and Nohi Bus changes its timetable on the same day, so both are shown where they differ.

Shirakawa-go sits between Kanazawa and Takayama on the car-free corridor in my Japanese Alps without a car guide.

Why go

Shirakawa-go is a village of gassho houses still lived in, and you can walk through it for free. Shirakawa Village counts 59 gassho houses in Ogimachi, the main settlement and the place the buses stop.

A short history

A few gassho houses are open inside for ¥300–¥400 each, and the open-air museum of gassho houses costs ¥800. The largest house, Wada House, is open 9:00–17:00 (¥400 for adults, ¥200 for children) and is a National Important Cultural Property.

For the view from above, a shuttle bus leaves from in front of Wada House for the observation deck every 20 minutes, 9:00–15:40, with no departures in the noon hour. It costs ¥300 one way for adults, paid in cash when you get off. The tourist association's English page still shows ¥200 and different hours; the figures here are from its Japanese FAQ.

Visiting rules

Shirakawa-go is a place where people live, and the village asks visitors to follow a few rules:

Stop for the day or stay the night?

Day visit Overnight
Time in the village 8:00–17:00; last bus 17:30 Evening and early morning too
Seeing it all About 2–3 hours on foot Same, plus the quiet hours
Luggage Terminal storage, same day only Carry your bags to the inn
Booking Bus seats Room about 3 months ahead; bus seats from 1 month ahead

Where the buses stop: Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal in Ogimachi. The tourist association's office is inside it (1086 Ogimachi, Shirakawa Village, Gifu), and the village starts about a minute's walk away.

Fares are from the operators' pages (checked October 15–20, 2026). The Nagoya fare is from Nohi Bus's March 2026 timetable. "—" means I could not confirm it on the operator's page. Nohi Bus changes the Toyama fare on December 1, 2026, but has not announced the new amount, so check it before you ride.

From Takayama

Nohi Bus runs 16 round trips a day from Takayama Nohi Bus Center, taking about 50 minutes. Only the buses marked in the timetable need a reservation; on the others you can use a mobile ticket. Some buses do not run on weekends, holidays, August 13–15 and December 29 – January 3.

From December 1, 2026, Nohi Bus restores some Takayama → Shirakawa-go buses as reservation-only buses, and starts a direct Takayama – Kanazawa bus that does not stop at Shirakawa-go. Check that your bus stops at Shirakawa-go before you book.

From Kanazawa

Hokutetsu's Kanazawa – Shirakawa-go – Takayama line leaves Kanazawa Station West Exit, stop 4, 9 times a day between 8:10 and 16:00 (Hokutetsu timetable revised April 1, 2025). The ride to Shirakawa-go takes 1 hour 15 minutes. Hokutetsu says every bus on this line is reserved-seat only, and sells seats from one month before the travel date. Nohi Bus, which runs the same line, says only some buses need a reservation. The two companies describe it differently, so book ahead.

You cannot break the journey on one ticket. If you get off at Shirakawa-go and go on to Takayama later, you pay for each section and reserve each bus.

From Toyama and Nagoya

Express buses run from Toyama Station (about 1 hour 20 minutes; some buses reservation-only) and from Nagoya's Meitetsu Bus Center (about 2 hours 30 minutes). Nohi Bus tickets for Takayama – Shirakawa-go cannot be used on the Nagoya buses.

On a day tour from Takayama

Nohi Bus runs a year-round sightseeing bus from Takayama to Shirakawa-go and Ainokura in Gokayama, leaving at 8:30 and returning at 15:50, for ¥9,000 for adults (¥7,000 for children). It is reservation-only, from 3 months ahead, through the Nohi Bus reservation center.

In English, Nohi Bus points to Japan Bus Online for reservations. The Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass covers the Takayama – Shirakawa-go – Kanazawa and Toyama buses, but you still need to reserve the buses that require it. Pass holders cannot book on Japan Bus Online; Nohi Bus sends them to its reservation center (+81 577-32-1688).

The last bus out

On the current timetable, the last buses from Shirakawa-go leave at 17:30: to Takayama Nohi Bus Center (arriving 18:35) and to Kanazawa Station West Exit (arriving 18:45). Nohi Bus warns that traffic, snow or a closed expressway can make buses more than 2 hours late. Leave spare time if you have a train to catch. From December 1, 2026, Nohi Bus says buses from Shirakawa-go to Takayama do not change; I have not confirmed the Kanazawa times.

Luggage

LuggageBack to Takayama the same day? Leave the suitcase there

If you return to Takayama the same day, the coin lockers at Takayama Station and the Nohi Bus Center take bags for ¥400–¥700 (cash only, up to 3 days).

Where to stay without a car

To see the village after the day visitors leave, stay the night: guests can walk around in the evening and early morning, when day visitors are asked to stay away.

Best time to visit

Season What to expect
Winter First snow in early December; snow on the ground from late December to late February, over 170 cm in February
Spring Snow melts around March; cherry blossoms mid-April to early May
Summer Fresh green around the village
Autumn Autumn colors late October to early November

Dates are the tourist association's typical ranges; they shift with the weather each year.

WinterBuses can run more than 2 hours late

Snow, traffic or a closed expressway can delay the Takayama – Shirakawa-go buses by more than 2 hours, and some buses do not run from December 29 to January 3. The Gokayama Suganuma stop is served only from April to November.

Snow boots. In winter the bus terminal rents boots (23.0–27.0 cm) for ¥1,000 a day or ¥1,500 for 2 days, 8:30–17:00. You cannot reserve them, and they are not rented out during events.

The winter light-up. In 2027 the village is lit up on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 17:30–19:30. Entry is by advance reservation only, with no tickets on the day. The tourist association warns that the last regular buses leave Shirakawa-go around 16:00–17:00 on those days, too early to use after the light-up. The tourist association says new bookings for light-up-only buses are currently "very difficult", and light-up stays in the village are allocated by lottery (applications close October 31, 2026 at 23:59 Japan time). An ordinary booking in the village may not include entry. See the tourist association's light-up page.

How I checked this

  1. I read the timetables, fares and notices of Nohi Bus and Hokutetsu, and the visitor pages of the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association and Shirakawa Village.
  2. I checked each fare, time and rule against those pages between October 15 and 20, 2026, and used the Japanese page where the English page showed older values.
  3. Where the two bus companies describe reservations differently, I show both. Sources: Nohi Bus; Hokutetsu; Shirakawa-go Tourist Association; Shirakawa Village; JR East; JR West
What I could not confirm yet
  • The Shirakawa-go → Toyama fare from December 1, 2026.
  • The Nagoya – Shirakawa-go fare on Meitetsu Bus's own page.
  • Coin locker prices at Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal.
  • Clinic hours and shops for daily needs in Shirakawa Village, on the village's own pages.

I will update this page when the operators publish their winter 2026–27 details.
