About Rural Japan Guides
Rural Japan Guides is an English-language guide to Japan's central mountains — the Japanese Alps, the Kiso Valley, Hida and the old post towns in between — and to old roads such as the Nakasendo, for travelers who want to get around without a car.
Rural Japan Guides has been run from Japan since 2026. I am Rio, and I research and write the guides.
Why I started this site
I am Japanese. Traveling around the world made me see my own country with fresh eyes, and value what I had at home more than ever: quiet post towns on old roads, villages tucked into the mountains, local trains that take their time.
Most of these places are not on the main tourist routes. They are well worth the trip, but they can be hard to plan if you do not read Japanese or do not drive, so many visitors never reach them at all.
Rural Japan Guides is my way of sharing these places with you. I hope these guides help you find a corner of Japan you will love.
How I research
Most practical information for rural Japan — bus timetables, seasonal road closures, trail notices — is published first, and often only, in Japanese by rail and bus operators, prefectures and municipalities. I read those sources, check them and turn them into clear English. Every guide shows when its facts were last checked: look for the "Checked against official sources on" line near the top of each article.
- Start from the official source. For transport, that means the operator's own Japanese timetable or notice. For trails and closures, the prefecture, municipality or official tourism association.
- Record the source and the date. Each key fact (a fare, a last bus, a season start date) links to its source, with the date I checked it.
- Cross-check where possible. When two official sources disagree, I say so and tell you which one I followed.
- Label images honestly. Photos come from free-license sources such as Wikimedia Commons (public domain, CC0 or CC BY), Unsplash and Pexels, or are used with permission, and are credited — see Photo credits. Any illustration is labeled "Illustration — not the actual property" (or "not the actual place").
Editorial policy
- Accuracy over completeness. If I cannot confirm something from an official source, I leave it out or mark it as unconfirmed.
- Paid links, stated plainly. Some guides contain affiliate links. A guide with these links says so in a line at the top, and each link is marked "(affiliate)".
- No advice I am not qualified to give. I do not give legal, tax, visa or real-estate advice.
Information can change after my last check. Always confirm with the official operator before you travel.
