The Japanese Alps in Winter Without a Car: What Runs, What Closes

A month-by-month look at which buses and trains keep running from December to March, what shuts for the season, where the snow is easiest to reach by public transport and what to book before you go.

The short answer
  • In winter, Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Takayama and Hakuba stay reachable by bus and train; Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route are closed.
  • Nohi Bus warns that heavy snow can delay the Takayama – Shirakawa-go route by 2 hours or more, and some departures do not run from December 29 to January 3.
  • Last winter some Nagano – Hakuba express buses were reservation-only; the 2026–27 winter timetable had not been published when I checked.
My pick

For snow without a car, base yourself in Takayama and add Shirakawa-go by bus; go to Hakuba for the ski resorts and the mountains.

The Kanazawa – Shirakawa-go – Takayama buses run all winter, with some departures off over New Year and delays in heavy snow.

Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route are closed, so leave them for April to November.

For a trip between December and March with no car, this guide covers which buses and trains keep running, what closes, where you can see deep snow from a bus or train and what to book before you go. Times, dates and fares were checked on official pages between October 15 and 24, 2026. Winter timetables change every year, so the dates for 2026–27 are marked where they have not been published yet.

For the year-round routes, passes and fares, see my Japanese Alps without a car guide.

¹ Some Takayama departures do not run from December 29 to January 3, and heavy snow can delay buses by 2 hours or more. ² The current timetable runs to November 30, 2026, and the 2026–27 winter timetable had not been published on October 24, 2026. Last winter (December 13 to March 31) reservation-only and non-reserved buses ran side by side. ³ From December 1 to March 19: ¥4,500 a trip for up to 3 bags. ⁴ JR East's November 2026 timetable, checked on October 24, 2026, shows the two direct local trains running every day to February 28, 2027. It does not yet show March. ? = not confirmed. Nohi Bus's Takayama – Matsumoto page has no winter note; its only seasonal note is extra runs from December 29, 2026 to January 3, 2027. The Matsumoto – Hakuba direct bus ran from December 13, 2025 to March 8, 2026, and its 2026–27 season had not been announced.

Winter 2026–27Two closures to plan around

The last Kamikochi buses run on November 15, 2026. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is open until November 30, then closed for the winter; the 2027 opening date has not been announced.

Where snow is easy without a car

Shirakawa-go, Takayama and Hakuba give you snow from a bus or train seat, without driving on winter roads. Kanazawa and Matsumoto work as rail bases on either side.

Base Snow (official figures) How you get there in winter
Shirakawa-go Snow covers the village from late December to late February; it can pass 170 cm in February Bus from Takayama (about 50 min) or Kanazawa (about 1 hr 15 min)
Takayama Normal deepest snow 44 cm in January; January averages −1.2°C Limited express Hida from Nagoya; buses from Kanazawa and Shirakawa-go
Hakuba Normal deepest snow 82 cm in January and 97 cm in February Express bus from Nagano; JR Oito Line from Matsumoto

The Shirakawa-go figures come from the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association; the Takayama and Hakuba figures are the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 normals for the deepest snow on the ground each month. The two sources measure differently, so read them as a rough guide, not a ranking.

Shirakawa-go in snow

The tourist association says the first snow has fallen in early December in recent years, and the village stays under snow from late December to late February. In February the snow can be more than 170 cm deep.

  • Buses: Takayama to Shirakawa-go takes about 50 minutes, ¥2,800 until November 30, 2026 and ¥2,900 from December 1. From Kanazawa it takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, with the same fares.
  • New from December 1, 2026: Nohi Bus is bringing back reservation-only buses from Takayama to Shirakawa-go, and adding a direct Takayama – Kanazawa bus that does not stop at Shirakawa-go. Check which bus you book.
  • Boots: the bus terminal rents winter boots from 8:30 to 17:00: ¥1,000 for the day, ¥1,500 for two days, sizes 23.0 to 27.0 cm. You cannot reserve them, and there is no rental during events.
  • Hours: the village asks day visitors to come between 8:00 and 17:00, except on event days such as the light-up.

The winter light-up: in 2027 the village lights up on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, from 17:30 to 19:30.

  • Tickets: entry is by advance reservation and ticket only. There are no same-day tickets, and you cannot simply turn up.
  • Getting back: the tourist association says the last regular buses leave Shirakawa-go around 16:00 to 17:00, so you cannot ride one home after the lights.
  • Without a car: the options are a light-up bus tour, booked directly with each bus company (Nohi Bus, Hokutetsu and others; booking opens at 14:00 on October 13, October 19, October 26 and November 2, 2026, for the January 11, 17, 24 and 31 tours), or a night in the village. Village rooms for light-up nights go by lottery: applications run from October 1 to October 31, 2026, and winners hear on November 10.
  • The viewpoint: observation-deck tickets are not sold on their own; they come only with some village stays and some bus tours.

For the village itself, buses and where to stay, see my Shirakawa-go guide.

Takayama

Takayama is the easiest snow base without a car: the limited express Hida stops at the station, and buses to Shirakawa-go leave from the Nohi Bus Center next to it.

  • Winter hours: the Miyagawa Morning Market runs from 8:00 to 12:00 from December to March (from 7:00 the rest of the year). The Jinya-mae Morning Market switches to 8:00 a month earlier, from November to March, and opens every day.
  • Closed: Takayama Jinya, the Edo-period government office, closes over the New Year holidays and may close at short notice in bad weather. From November to March it is open 8:45–16:30 (last entry 16:00).
  • Day tour: if you would rather not handle a snowy bus stop yourself, Nohi Bus runs a sightseeing bus from Takayama to Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Ainokura all year: ¥9,000 (child ¥7,000), 8:30 to 15:50, reservation required, bookable 3 months ahead.

My Takayama guide covers the station, the old town and the day-trip buses.

Hakuba

In the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 normals for Hakuba, about 216 cm of fresh snow falls over January, and the snow on the ground reaches about 97 cm at its deepest in February. The first figure adds up each snowfall; the second is the depth at its peak.

  • From Nagano: Alpico express buses take 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours 5 minutes, depending on the stop. Last winter, from December 13, 2025 to March 31, 2026, reservation-only buses ran alongside non-reserved ones, and reservations opened two months ahead.
  • From Matsumoto: in the JR Oito Line's November 2026 timetable, two local trains a day run from Matsumoto to Hakuba without a change (9:20 and 11:09); other local trains stop at Shinano-Omachi or earlier, so you change there. The train pages show the two direct trains running every day to February 28, 2027.
  • Direct bus from Matsumoto: last winter Alpico ran one reservation-only bus a day each way, ¥3,500. On October 24, 2026 its page said there was no service at present.

For the timetables, the winter reservation rules and getting around the village, see my guide to Hakuba by bus and train and Matsumoto to Hakuba by bus or train.

Kanazawa as a snow-day base

Kanazawa sits on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and buses to Shirakawa-go leave from Kanazawa Station's west exit (platform 4). Hokutetsu says every seat on its Kanazawa – Shirakawa-go – Takayama buses must be reserved, bookable a month ahead. Nohi Bus marks only some departures as reservation-only. Book a seat to be safe.

Matsumoto

Matsumoto is the rail hub on the Nagano side: limited expresses run from Nagoya and from Shinjuku, and the JR Oito Line runs north to Hakuba. The Matsumoto Castle National Treasure Ice Sculpture Festival runs from January 22 to 24, 2027, at the castle, Hanatokei Park and other sites in the city, with free admission. The official page does not give opening hours.

Closed in winter: Kamikochi and the Alpine Route

  • Kamikochi: Nohi Bus and Alpico both end their Kamikochi buses on November 15, 2026. Alpico's winter timetable for the area runs from November 16, 2026 to April 16, 2027, with no public transport to Kamikochi.
  • Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: open from April 15 to November 30, 2026, then closed for the winter (the 2027 opening date has not been announced). In winter there is no way through by bus or cable car, so plan the route for April to November.

Passes and services that stop before winter

What Last day in 2026
Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass November 10 (valid from April 15)
Alpine Route baggage service November 8
Kamikochi buses November 15
Alpine Route November 30

The Magome – Tsumago luggage forwarding keeps going in winter, but as a temporary service from December 1 to March 19: ¥4,500 a trip for up to 3 bags, instead of ¥1,000 a bag. See my Magome to Tsumago walk guide.

Buses that need a reservation in winter

Route Reservation Opens
Kanazawa – Shirakawa-go – Takayama Hokutetsu: all seats; Nohi: some departures 1 month ahead
Takayama – Hirayu – Matsumoto (if it runs in winter) Required 1 month ahead, until 30 min before departure
Nagano – Hakuba (winter 2025–26) Some buses 2 months ahead
Matsumoto – Hakuba direct (winter 2025–26) All seats, web only 2 months ahead
Sightseeing bus, Takayama – Shirakawa-go Required 3 months ahead

Nohi Bus sells Takayama – Shirakawa-go tickets in English on Japan Bus Online. Its mobile tickets are only for buses that do not need a reservation.

Snow delays and New Year schedules

  • Shirakawa-go line: Nohi Bus warns that traffic, heavy snow or a closed expressway can delay buses by 2 hours or more.
  • Weekends, holidays and New Year: the 19:00 from Takayama to Shirakawa-go does not run on weekends, holidays, August 13–15 and December 29 – January 3; the last daily bus leaves at 17:50. Nohi Bus also says some other departures do not run from December 29 to January 3. These are the current times, and Nohi Bus changes the Takayama – Shirakawa-go timetable on December 1, 2026.
  • Takayama – Matsumoto: the only seasonal note on Nohi Bus's page is extra runs from December 29, 2026 to January 3, 2027.

On the day you travel, check the live status pages:

I have not found an official figure for how often winter buses run late, so leave a spare half day before a Shinkansen or a flight.

Getting around with luggage in snow

  • Takayama Station: coin lockers at the station and the Nohi Bus Center cost ¥400, ¥600 or ¥700 by size, take cash only and hold bags for up to three days.
  • Shirakawa-go: a bag storage service takes bags from 8:00 to 17:00 for the same day only, from ¥500 for small and medium bags and from ¥1,000 for large. The bus terminal also has coin lockers, but the tourist association does not list their prices.
  • On the bus: luggage space on the Takayama – Shirakawa-go line is shared and limited, so a very large suitcase may not fit.
  • Skis on Alpico buses: skis and snowboards in a cover go in the luggage hold at no extra charge.
  • Sending skis ahead: Yamato's Ski Takkyubin needs skis in a dedicated bag and cover, sent by the cutoff two days before you ski (three days from some areas).

Where to stay in winter

  • Takayama: stay near the station or the Nohi Bus Center, so the walk to the first bus is short on icy pavements.
  • Shirakawa-go: the tourist association takes online bookings for farmhouse inns, ryokan and guesthouses about 3 months ahead. A night in the village means you can see it before the day buses arrive.
  • Hakuba: the village is spread out, so check how your lodging connects to the bus stops before you book. My Hakuba without a car guide covers the shuttles and the village taxi.
