- Lift passes for 2026–27: a Hakuba Valley one-day pass is ¥11,100 for 10 ski areas. A Niseko United one-day pass for 4 ski areas is ¥8,800 to ¥13,500, depending on the date.
- Pick Hakuba if your trip also includes Tokyo and the Japanese Alps; pick Niseko if you are flying into Hokkaido and want one bus from the airport.

Choose by your arrival airport first.
If you fly into Tokyo, Hakuba is a train and a bus away, and the rest of your trip can stay on the rail network.
If you fly into New Chitose Airport, Niseko is one reserved bus away, from December 12 to March 22.
- 1HakubaVia Tokyo and Nagano; ¥11,100 day pass
- 2NisekoVia New Chitose; ¥8,800–¥13,500 day pass
Hakuba, in Nagano, and Niseko, in Hokkaido, are both large ski areas that you can reach and get around without a car. The difference is mostly in the trip around the skiing: which airport you land at, how long the transfer takes and what one lift pass covers. This page puts the official numbers for 2026–27 side by side; it is not a review of the snow or the runs. For what runs and what closes in the Alps around Hakuba, see my guide to the Japanese Alps in winter without a car.

Getting there from the airport
Niseko: one bus from New Chitose
Hokkaido Chuo Bus runs a reserved bus from New Chitose Airport and Chitose Station to Niseko from December 12, 2026 to March 22, 2027. The ski areas open on November 28, so in the first two weeks this bus does not run.
- Fare: ¥6,000 one way and ¥10,000 return for an adult; ¥3,000 and ¥5,000 for a child.
- Time from the airport: 2 hours 56 minutes to Niseko Annupuri, 3 hours 16 minutes to Hilton Niseko Village and 3 hours 33 minutes to the Niseko Hirafu Welcome Center.
- Booking: you need a reservation, online or by phone, by 18:00 the day before. Seats are not assigned.
- Ski gear: skis and boards must be in a case.
By train, Niseko United gives about 1 hour 12 minutes from New Chitose Airport to Otaru on the Rapid Airport and about 1 hour 30 minutes from Otaru to Niseko on a local train. It notes that there are few trains. From Kutchan or Niseko Station, buses and taxis go to each ski area.
Hakuba: Tokyo first, or the airport shuttle
Hakuba has no airport of its own. From December 19, 2026, the Nagano Snow Shuttle runs between Hakuba and Narita (¥13,400 before tax) or Haneda (¥12,900 before tax) via Nagano; the trip usually takes 5.5 to 6.5 hours. Its booking site says some 2026–27 routes are still waiting for final approval. My Hakuba to Narita and Haneda guide has the details.
The other way is the train. The Hokuriku Shinkansen runs from Tokyo to Nagano; in the November 2026 weekday timetable, the Kagayaki 503 leaves Tokyo at 7:20 and reaches Nagano at 8:37. From Nagano, the Alpico express bus to Hakuba Happo costs ¥2,900 under the fare table that runs until November 30, 2026, and takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours 5 minutes, depending on the stop. My Hakuba without a car guide covers the winter bus.
The 2026–27 winter timetable for the Nagano – Hakuba bus had not been posted when I checked. On Niseko's access page, the airport bus times were still last season's, with a note that the 2026–27 times would be posted around October.

- Child (ages 4–12): ¥8,100 for one day in peak season.

Season dates
Niseko United lists these dates for 2026–27:
- Annupuri and Grand Hirafu: November 28, 2026 – May 5, 2027.
- Niseko Village: November 28, 2026 – April 4, 2027.
- Hanazono: November 28, 2026 – April 11, 2027.
- Night skiing: December 12, 2026 – March 22, 2027.
The Hakuba Valley pass page does not list season dates, and each of the 10 ski areas sets its own. Check the ski area you plan to use.
Getting around once you are there
In both places you can stay near a shuttle stop and leave the car out of it.
- Niseko: the official site says anyone with a valid lift pass for the day can ride the Niseko United shuttle; a day pass is used for that day when it is scanned. Others pay the regular fare.
- Hakuba: the 2026–27 pass page says the Hakuba Valley shuttle is free on days you ski with the pass; it is not valid for night skiing or the night shuttle. In 2025–26, the Line V shuttle linking all the ski areas cost ¥800 for an adult without a pass. See where to stay in Hakuba to pick an area near a stop.

Which one to choose
- Choose Hakuba if you land in Tokyo, want to ski more than 4 areas on one pass or plan to see Matsumoto, Takayama or other parts of the Japanese Alps on the same trip.
- Choose Niseko if you land at New Chitose or want one bus from the airport to the ski area. From Tokyo, that means a domestic flight to New Chitose first.
- For the pass, the Hakuba Valley one-day pass is cheaper from December 12 to March 22 (regular and peak season); in early and spring season, Niseko's is.
How I checked this
- I read the airport bus fares, times and booking rules on Hokkaido Chuo Bus's page.
- I read the train route, shuttle rules and lift pass prices and dates on Niseko United's English pages, and the Hakuba Valley pass on its English ticket page.
- The Hakuba access facts come from my earlier Hakuba guides, which use Alpico's and JR East's pages. Sources: Hokkaido Chuo Bus; Niseko United; Hakuba Valley
- The 2026–27 winter fare and timetable for the Nagano – Hakuba bus.
- The 2026–27 Hakuba Valley shuttle lines and times.
- Niseko United's shuttle dates for 2026–27 and the JR fare from New Chitose to Niseko.
- Niseko's one-day price from April 5 to May 5.

I will update this page when the winter timetables are posted.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hakuba or Niseko easier to reach without a car?
It depends on your airport. From New Chitose Airport, one reserved bus goes to Niseko in 2 hours 56 minutes to 3 hours 33 minutes. From Narita or Haneda, you can reach Hakuba by the Nagano Snow Shuttle from December 19 or by train to Nagano and then the express bus.
Which lift pass is cheaper?
For 2026–27, Niseko United's one-day pass is ¥8,800 in early and spring season, ¥12,600 in regular season and ¥13,500 from December 24 to February 28. The Hakuba Valley one-day pass is ¥11,100, and its page shows no seasonal prices.
When does the season start?
Niseko United lists November 28, 2026 as the first day at all 4 ski areas, with Annupuri and Hirafu open until May 5, 2027. For Hakuba, check each ski area's page; the valley pass page gives no season dates.
Can I ride the shuttle bus with my lift pass?
In Niseko, the official site says anyone with a valid lift pass for the day can ride the Niseko United shuttle, and others pay the fare. In Hakuba, the 2026–27 Hakuba Valley pass page says the shuttle bus is free on days you ski or snowboard. The 2026–27 shuttle lines and times had not been posted when I checked.
Can I do Hakuba and Niseko in one trip?
Yes, but they are on different islands. Hakuba is reached from Tokyo, and Niseko from New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, so allow a travel day between them.
Keep planning
