Where to Stay in Hakuba Without a Car: Areas Compared

Six areas compared by the bus stop you get off at, the fare from Nagano and the ski shuttle that served them last winter, from official pages checked in October 2026.

The short answer
  • Without a car, pick an area on the Nagano express bus route: the bus from Nagano Station is ¥2,900 to Hakuba Happo and ¥3,200 to Tsugaike Kogen or Hakuba Norikura (fare table planned to run until November 30, 2026).
  • In winter, check the bus before you pay for a room: last winter some Nagano – Hakuba buses were reservation-only and stops varied by bus, and the 2026–27 timetable had not been published on October 21, 2026.
  • Then stay near a stop. In 2025–26 each ski area had its own shuttle line and Line V linked them all; Hakuba Station is the one area with JR trains.

My pick

Stay in Happo if you want a direct bus from the Shinkansen.

Hakuba Happo bus terminal is a named stop on the Nagano express bus, ¥2,900 from Nagano Station on the current fare table, and last winter most non-reserved buses ran non-stop to it.

Choose Hakuba Station instead if you will also use JR trains, and Tsugaike or Norikura if you ski there most days.

  1. 1Happo¥2,900 from Nagano; Lines H, E and V (2025–26)
  2. 2Hakuba StationJR Oito Line and the Nagano bus
  3. 3Tsugaike or Norikura¥3,200 from Nagano; Lines T, N and V (2025–26)

Hakuba's lodging is spread along a valley, and without a car the stop nearest your room decides how easy each day is. This guide compares the areas by what you can check on official pages: the bus stop you get off at, the fare from Nagano and the ski shuttle that served them last winter.

For the ways in from Tokyo, Osaka and Matsumoto, see my Hakuba without a car guide.

Fares, stops and shuttle lines below come from Alpico, Hakuba Valley, Hakuba Village and Yamato pages, checked October 16–21, 2026. I have not stayed in these lodgings and do not review them.

Fares are adult one-way fares on Alpico's spring-to-autumn fare table, planned to run until November 30, 2026; the winter fare had not been published on October 21, 2026. "—" means I have not found the fare on an official page. Shuttle lines are from Hakuba Valley's 2025–26 page. "Village lodging area" is the area name used on the Hakuba Village Tourism Bureau's lodging pages (see below).

Area by area

Happo

On the Nagano bus, the stops named for this area are Hakuba Happo bus terminal and, just before it, Snow Peak Land Station Hakuba. The village tourism bureau's lodging pages list Happo as one of six areas.

  • From Nagano: ¥2,900 on the current fare table. Last winter most non-reserved buses ran non-stop between Nagano Station and the Happo terminal.
  • Shuttles (2025–26): Line H to Happo-one, Line E between Happo and Iwatake, and Line V between all the ski areas.
  • Early bus back: on the timetable running until November 30, 2026, a 6:30 bus leaves Hakuba Happo for Nagano every day.

Hakuba Station

Hakuba Station is the area with JR trains. The Oito Line runs here from Matsumoto all year, and in the November 2026 timetable the Azusa 5 limited express runs from Shinjuku to Hakuba every day without a change. The Nagano express bus also stops at Hakuba Station on its current timetable.

  • Shuttles (2025–26): Hakuba Valley's shuttle page does not list a stop at the station, so check with your lodging.
  • Good for: a stay that mixes skiing with day trips by train, for example to Matsumoto. More on that route is in my guide to the Matsumoto to Hakuba bus and train.

Goryu and Hakuba47

Three stops serve this side of the valley: Sun Sun Park Hakuba, Goryu Escal Plaza and Hakuba Goryu. Alpico's timetable marks all three as drop-off only toward Hakuba and pick-up only toward Nagano. The village's lodging pages file this area under Goryu.

  • Shuttles (2025–26): Lines G1–6 to Goryu Escal Plaza, G7–10 to Goryu Iimori, Line L between Hakuba47 and Goryu, and Line V. Hakuba Goryu also ran its own free shuttle for ski guests from December 13, 2025 to March 31, 2026.
  • From Matsumoto: last winter's direct bus from Matsumoto (once a day, ¥3,500, reserved seats) stopped at Hakuba Goryu. No 2026–27 service had been announced on October 21, 2026.

Iwatake

Two stops serve Iwatake: Iwatake Shinden and Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort. The lodging pages list it as Iwatake.

  • Shuttles (2025–26): Line I to Iwatake, Line E between Happo and Iwatake, and Line V.
  • From Matsumoto: last winter's direct bus ended at Iwatake.

Tsugaike and Norikura

These are the last two stops on the Nagano bus: Tsugaike Kogen, then Hakuba Norikura, both ¥3,200 from Nagano Station on the current fare table. The village's lodging pages do not list them as areas.

  • Shuttles (2025–26): Line T to Tsugaike, Line N to Hakuba Norikura, and Line V.

Finding a room

The Hakuba Village Tourism Bureau lists lodgings on its official lodging pages, in Japanese. They are sorted into six areas: Happo, Goryu, Iwatake, Sanosaka, Minekata and Highland. The search filters by type: hotel, ryokan, minshuku, pension, lodge, rental house, cottage or other.

Before you book, ask the lodging:

  1. Which bus stop is nearest, and how far it is on foot in snow.
  2. Which shuttle stop is nearest in winter.
  3. Where the ski school you want meets, and how to get there.
  4. Whether the room has a kitchen or laundry, if you are staying a week or more.
  5. Whether it will take a parcel of skis or a suitcase sent ahead.

Getting there and winter booking

The Alpico express bus leaves from Nagano Station's east exit and takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours 5 minutes, depending on the stop. From April to November you buy the ticket at the counter or on board.

Winter 2025–26Some Nagano – Hakuba buses were reservation-only

Reservation-only buses ran alongside non-reserved ones from December 13, 2025 to March 31, 2026, and stops varied by bus. The 2026–27 winter timetable and fare had not been published on October 21, 2026.

Last winter you also could not ride the bus between two stops inside the Hakuba Goryu – Hakuba Cortina section; Alpico pointed riders to the village shuttle for those trips. If you book a room for the winter, check that the bus you want stops near it before you pay.

Luggage and ski bags

  • Skis on the bus: Alpico carries skis and snowboards in the luggage hold if they are in a cover.
  • Skis by delivery: Yamato's ski delivery takes skis to the ski area by the day before you ski, and you pick them up at its front desk. Send them by the deadline 2 days before you ski (3 days from some areas).
  • Suitcases by delivery: from the Kanto area (Tokyo included) to Nagano Prefecture, Yamato's cash rate is ¥3,020 for a 160-size parcel and ¥3,680 for 180 size, the rate it charges for skis. For a group of four, four 160-size suitcases and four ski bags come to ¥26,800 one way, before ski covers (rates checked October 21, 2026). More is in my guide's section on skis and suitcases.
  • Not in the demand taxi: Hakuba's ¥300 day demand taxi does not take skis, snowboards or luggage that does not fit on a seat.

How I checked this

  1. I listed the stops on Alpico's Nagano – Hakuba timetable running until November 30, 2026, and read the fare table for the same period.
  2. I matched each area to the ski shuttle lines on Hakuba Valley's 2025–26 shuttle page.
  3. I read the areas and lodging types on the Hakuba Village Tourism Bureau's lodging pages.
  4. Where 2026–27 winter details had not been published, I used last winter's pages and marked them 2025–26. Sources: Alpico Kotsu; JR East; Hakuba Valley; Hakuba Goryu; Hakuba Village; Yamato Transport
What I could not confirm yet
  • Walking distances from lodgings to bus and shuttle stops.
  • Bus fares from Nagano to Hakuba Station, Goryu and Iwatake.
  • The 2026–27 winter bus timetable and the 2026–27 shuttle lines and fares.
  • Echoland and Wadano: the official pages I checked do not describe them as areas, so this guide groups lodging by bus stop instead.
  • Price ranges for lodging in each area.
  • Ski schools, restaurants and shops in each area.

I will update this page when the operators publish the winter details.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in Hakuba without a car?

Near a stop on the Nagano express bus. On the spring-to-autumn fare table planned to run until November 30, 2026, the bus from Nagano Station costs ¥2,900 to Hakuba Happo and ¥3,200 to Tsugaike Kogen or Hakuba Norikura. Happo has a bus terminal, and Hakuba Station also has JR trains.

How do I get from Nagano Station to my area in Hakuba?

Take the Alpico express bus from Nagano Station's east exit. On the current timetable it stops at Sun Sun Park Hakuba, Goryu Escal Plaza and Hakuba Goryu (all three drop-off only toward Hakuba), then Hakuba Station, Snow Peak Land Station Hakuba, Hakuba Happo bus terminal, Iwatake, Kirikubo, Ochikura, Tsugaike Kogen and Hakuba Norikura. The trip takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours 5 minutes, depending on the stop.

Do I need to book the Hakuba bus when I book my room?

Not from April to November, when you buy the ticket at the counter or on board. Last winter (December 13, 2025 – March 31, 2026) some Nagano – Hakuba buses were reservation-only and others were not, and stops varied by bus. The 2026–27 winter timetable had not been published on October 21, 2026, so check it before you fix your dates.

Is there a shuttle from my lodging to the slopes?

In 2025–26 the Hakuba Valley shuttle ran a line for each ski area (for example Line H for Happo-one and Line T for Tsugaike) and Line V between all of them. Some lines ran only toward the slopes in the morning and only away from them in the afternoon. The 2026–27 dates and fares had not been posted on October 21, 2026.

Can I send my ski bag to my accommodation?

Yamato's ski delivery takes skis to the ski area, where you pick them up at its front desk. Its page does not say whether you can send skis to a hotel, so ask your lodging before you book delivery.

Keep planning
