- In the 1991–2020 normals, Hakuba gets about 130 cm of snowfall in December, against 216 cm in January, and the deepest snow on the ground averages 46 cm.
- On October 21, 2026, Tsugaike had set December 1 as its opening day and Cortina planned December 12; the other main Hakuba ski areas had not announced dates.
- Hakuba Valley says peak season runs from mid-December to the end of March, and its shuttle buses can be too full to board when it snows.
If skiing matters, aim for the second half of December rather than the first, and book New Year early.
December gets about 130 cm of snowfall in a normal year, against 216 cm in January, so early December can be thin.
Mid-December to the end of March is Hakuba Valley's peak season, so expect busier lifts and higher prices.
By October 21, 2026 only Tsugaike (December 1) and Cortina (December 12) had announced opening dates.

December is the month Hakuba's ski season starts, and the snow builds through the month. This guide covers what the official figures say about December snow and cold, which ski areas had announced their 2026–27 opening dates, and what changes over New Year. Dates and figures were checked on official pages on October 21, 2026, unless another date is given.
My focus here is December itself. For the rest of the trip:
- Getting there from Tokyo: Tokyo to Hakuba by train
- Where to stay: where to stay in Hakuba
- Skis and luggage: sending skis to Hakuba, with costs from Tokyo and Osaka
- Everything else without a car: my Hakuba without a car guide
December snow: how much to expect
The Japan Meteorological Agency's normals for its Hakuba station (1991–2020) show December as the month the snow builds, not its deepest month.
| Month | Snowfall in the month | Deepest snow on the ground |
|---|---|---|
| November | 14 cm | 7 cm |
| December | 130 cm | 46 cm |
| January | 216 cm | 82 cm |
| February | 174 cm | 97 cm |
| March | 110 cm | 70 cm |
Snowfall is the total of each day's new snow over the month; the deepest snow is the greatest depth on the ground in the month. Both are 30-year averages, so a single December can have much more or much less.
What this means for a December trip:
- Early December: the snow is still building, and Hakuba Valley says each ski area's opening day depends on snowfall.
- Mid to late December: Hakuba Valley treats mid-December to the end of March as its peak season.
- If snow is the point of the trip: January and February have more of it, by the same normals.
How recent seasons started
Opening days move from year to year with the snow. What the official pages show for the last two seasons:
| Season | What happened (official pages) |
|---|---|
| 2024–25 | Tsugaike, Hakuba Goryu and Happo-one opened on November 30, 2024. An undated post on Hakuba Valley's site says only the upper areas of some ski areas could open at first, and that early-season weather and snow vary a lot. |
| 2025–26 | On November 27, 2025, Happo-one said it was ready to open from December 1 but that the date depended on the weather and snowfall. Iwatake announced a season from December 19, 2025 to March 29, 2026. |
I have not found an official list of the dates every ski area actually opened in 2025–26, so the table gives only what each page said at the time.
December weather
| Normal (1991–2020) | November | December |
|---|---|---|
| Average temperature | 5.5°C | −0.1°C |
| Average daily high | 11.5°C | 4.5°C |
| Average daily low | 0.9°C | −4.0°C |
| Precipitation | 100.4 mm | 135.6 mm |
| Sunshine | 112.1 hours | 75.0 hours |
December's average sits just below freezing, with nights well below it. December also has about a third less sunshine than November in the normals. The figures are averages, not a forecast; I have not found an official forecast for December 2026.
Ski area opening dates for 2026–27
Hakuba Valley says its ski areas usually start opening from around late November, on different days depending on snowfall. Its 2026–27 season pass starts on the first ski area opening day, planned for December 2026.
| Ski area | 2026–27 opening (as of Oct 21, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Tsugaike | December 1 (may change with weather and snow) |
| Hakuba Cortina | December 12 (planned, to March 29) |
| Happo-one | Not announced |
| Hakuba Goryu | Not announced |
| Hakuba47 | Not confirmed (the site did not load) |
| Hakuba Iwatake | Not announced |
| Hakuba Sanosaka | Not announced |
| Hakuba Norikura | Not announced |
Tsugaike says its December 1 opening may change with the weather and snow. Before you book an early-December trip around skiing, check each ski area's news page in late November.
Getting there and around in December
The transport is covered in my other guides, so here is only what changes in December.
- Nagano – Hakuba bus: the current timetable runs to November 30, 2026, and on October 24, 2026 neither the winter timetable nor any times from December 1 had been published. Last winter's winter timetable started on December 13, so check what runs in early December before you book. Last winter (December 13, 2025 to March 31, 2026) reservation-only and non-reserved buses ran side by side, with booking two months ahead. See winter reservations on the Nagano bus.
- Matsumoto – Hakuba direct bus: last winter it ran from December 13, 2025 to March 8, 2026; on October 24, 2026 its page said there was no service at present. See Matsumoto to Hakuba by bus or train.
- JR Oito Line: two local trains a day run from Matsumoto to Hakuba without a change (9:20, arriving 11:16, and 11:09, arriving 12:45); other local trains stop at Shinano-Omachi or earlier, so you change there. JR East's November 2026 timetable shows both direct trains running every day through December (checked October 24).
- Shuttle buses between ski areas: the 2026–27 dates had not been published on October 21, 2026, and I have not confirmed whether they run in early December. Hakuba Valley warns that the buses can be very crowded when it snows, that a full bus cannot take more passengers, and that evening buses, the last one above all, fill up, so get to the stop early.
New Year in Hakuba
- Peak season: Hakuba Valley treats mid-December to the end of March as peak season. I have not found official crowd figures for New Year, so I have not given any.
- Countdown: last season Happo-one held a countdown event on December 31, 2025, in front of the ski school at the Nakiyama slope, with a lottery from 23:00, a countdown at 23:59 and fireworks at midnight. The 2026 event had not been announced.
- Staying outside Hakuba: last season Omachi City ran a free shuttle bus between the Omachi Onsenkyo hot spring area and Hakuba's ski areas every day from December 27, 2025 to February 23, 2026. The 2026–27 service had not been announced.
- Book early: last winter, reservations for the Nagano – Hakuba reserved buses opened two months ahead, and New Year falls in peak season. Book transport and rooms for the New Year week as soon as the 2026–27 timetables come out.
- On the day: check JR East's train status for the Shinetsu area and Alpico's express bus status page before you leave. My Hakuba guide covers snow delays.
Christmas and December events
On October 21, 2026, Hakuba Valley's event list had no events with December dates, and I have not found an official Christmas event for 2026. The one December event I could confirm is last season's Happo-one countdown on New Year's Eve, covered above. Check the Hakuba Valley event list closer to your trip.
When to check what before a December trip
Most of what decides a December trip is published late, so the planning runs on a few check dates. The timings below follow last winter's pattern and this season's announcements; they are not fixed rules.
| When | What to check |
|---|---|
| October 2026 | Tsugaike and Cortina dates are out; book rooms if your dates are fixed |
| Mid-November | The Nagano – Hakuba winter timetable, expected around then but not yet published |
| Two months before you travel | Reservations for winter buses opened two months ahead last winter |
| Late November | Opening announcements from the other ski areas, which depend on snowfall |
| The week before | Each ski area's news page for which lifts and slopes are open |
| The day you travel | JR and Alpico status pages for snow delays |
Where to check opening news
Each ski area posts its own opening announcement. These are the official news pages:
- Hakuba Valley (all areas): hakubavalley.com, in English
- Happo-one: happo-one.jp news
- Tsugaike: tsugaike.gr.jp, the 2026–27 opening notice

Some of these pages are in Japanese only. Opening days are the part most likely to change, so check close to your trip.
Is December a good month for Hakuba?
The answer depends on what you want from the trip.
- For skiing: the second half of December falls in Hakuba Valley's peak season, while early-December opening days depend on snowfall. Even then, the snow is usually shallower than in January.
- For snow scenery without skiing: December has snow in a normal year, but January and February have more.
- For New Year: you can be in the mountains for the countdown, but it is peak season, so book as early as possible.
- Opening dates for Happo-one, Goryu, Iwatake, Sanosaka and Norikura in 2026–27, and whether Hakuba47 has announced one
- The 2026–27 winter timetable for the Nagano – Hakuba bus and the Hakuba Valley shuttle buses, and what runs from December 1 to 12
- Whether the Matsumoto – Hakuba direct bus runs in winter 2026–27
- The 2026 New Year countdown event and the 2026–27 Omachi free shuttle
- Official crowd figures for New Year
- The dates each ski area actually opened in 2025–26
Frequently asked questions
Is there enough snow in Hakuba in December?
It varies from year to year, and early December can be thin. In the 1991–2020 normals, about 130 cm of snow falls in December and the snow on the ground reaches 46 cm at its deepest, against 82 cm in January. Hakuba Valley says opening dates depend on snowfall.
When do Hakuba ski resorts open for 2026–27?
On October 21, 2026, Tsugaike had set December 1 and Cortina planned December 12 to March 29. Happo-one, Goryu, Iwatake, Sanosaka and Hakuba Norikura had not announced dates, and Hakuba47's site did not load when I checked. Hakuba Valley says its areas usually start opening from around late November.
How cold is Hakuba in December?
The Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 normals for Hakuba give an average of −0.1°C in December, with daily highs of 4.5°C and lows of −4.0°C.
Is Hakuba busy over New Year?
Hakuba Valley calls mid-December to the end of March its peak season. No official page I checked gives crowd figures for New Year, but the shuttle bus page warns that buses can be too full to board when it snows.
Do the Hakuba shuttle buses run in December?
They run in the ski season, but the 2026–27 dates had not been published on October 21, 2026; the page still showed the 2025–26 timetable. I have not confirmed whether they run in early December.
Keep planning
