- There are two main ways back by public transport: the Alpico express bus to Nagano and then the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tokyo Station, or the Azusa 38 limited express straight to Shinjuku.
- In the November 2026 timetable, the Azusa 38 leaves Hakuba Station at 13:43 every day and reaches Shinjuku at 17:26, with no change. It is the one train a day from Hakuba to Shinjuku.
- The bus leaves the Hakuba Happo bus terminal six times a day (until November 30, 2026). With the 11:10 bus and the 13:23 Hakutaka you reach Tokyo Station at 14:52.
Take the bus and the Shinkansen, unless you are going to Shinjuku.
The bus and Shinkansen give you six departures a day from the Happo bus terminal, and the Shinkansen runs into the evening.
The Azusa 38 is the easier trip with bags: one seat from Hakuba Station to Shinjuku, but only at 13:43.
- 1Bus + Shinkansen3 hr – 4 hr 2 min to Tokyo Station; one change
- 2Azusa 3813:43 → Shinjuku 17:26; no change
- 3Local trains via MatsumotoSeveral changes; not covered here
Going back to Tokyo from Hakuba without a car comes down to two choices: the express bus to Nagano and the Shinkansen, or the one limited express a day to Shinjuku. The times below are from JR East's November 2026 timetable and Alpico's timetable running until November 30, 2026, JR's times checked October 24, 2026 and Alpico's October 21, 2026. These times run to the end of November 2026; winter timetables can differ, so check again for a December–March trip. I have not ridden these connections myself.
For the trip the other way, from Tokyo, see my Hakuba without a car guide.
The two ways compared
| Bus + Shinkansen | Azusa 38 | |
|---|---|---|
| From | Hakuba Happo bus terminal or Hakuba Station | Hakuba Station |
| To | Tokyo Station (also Ueno) | Shinjuku |
| Departures a day | 6 buses from Happo | 1 train |
| Time | 3 hr – 4 hr 2 min | 3 hr 43 min |
| Changes | 1, at Nagano | 0 |
| Seats | Bus seats not reserved (April – November) | All standard seats reserved; seat-unspecified ticket sold |
Bus totals are counted from the Hakuba Happo bus terminal; from Hakuba Station the bus leaves 6 minutes later. The Azusa total is from Hakuba Station. I have not listed fares: see the last section.
Bus to Nagano, then the Shinkansen
The Alpico express bus to Nagano leaves the Hakuba Happo bus terminal and stops at Hakuba Station 6 minutes later. On the timetable for April 1 – November 30, 2026 there is no booking: buy the ticket at the counter or on board.
| Hakuba Happo | Hakuba Station | Nagano Station (east exit) |
|---|---|---|
| 6:30 | 6:36 | 7:50 |
| 8:20 | 8:26 | 9:40 |
| 11:10 | 11:16 | 12:30 |
| 14:45 | 14:51 | 16:14 |
| 15:50 | 15:56 | 17:10 |
| 17:45 | 17:51 | 19:05 |
The 6:30 runs every day; on weekdays it continues past Nagano Station to Nagano Bus Terminal. The 11:10 and 14:45 start at Hakuba Norikura and the 15:50 and 17:45 at Tsugaike Kogen, so you can also board those near Tsugaike and Iwatake. Hakuba Goryu, Sun Sun Park Hakuba and Goryu Escal Plaza are pick-up only in this direction.
Connections at Nagano

These Shinkansen are in both the weekday and the weekend timetable for November 2026, with no running-day mark:
| Bus from Hakuba Happo | Shinkansen from Nagano | Tokyo Station | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6:30 | Kagayaki 502, 8:10 | 9:32 | 3 hr 2 min |
| 8:20 | Hakutaka 556, 9:47 | 11:20 | 3 hr |
| 11:10 | Hakutaka 562, 13:23 | 14:52 | 3 hr 42 min |
| 11:10 | Asama 618, 13:26 | 15:12 | 4 hr 2 min |
| 15:50 | Hakutaka 570, 17:37 | 19:12 | 3 hr 22 min |
| 15:50 | Kagayaki 512, 17:56 | 19:20 | 3 hr 30 min |
- The 8:20 bus: the change is 7 minutes, and bus times are approximate: Alpico notes that road conditions can make the bus late. On weekdays the 10:14 Kagayaki 506 (Tokyo 11:36) is the next train without a running-day mark if you miss it.
- The 11:10 bus: you have about 50 minutes at Nagano before the 13:23 Hakutaka. Other trains between 12:30 and 13:23 carry a running-day mark in JR's timetable, so check your date.
- Late trains: on weekdays the last Shinkansen to Tokyo leaves Nagano at 22:11, well after the last bus arrives (19:05).
Every train in this table stops at Ueno before Tokyo Station.
The Azusa 38 to Shinjuku
The Azusa 38 starts its run at Hakuba Station and stops at Matsumoto and Kofu on the way.
| Station | Time |
|---|---|
| Hakuba | 13:43 |
| Shinano-Omachi | 14:09 |
| Matsumoto | 14:47 – 14:50 |
| Kofu | 15:53 |
| Hachioji | 16:49 |
| Tachikawa | 16:58 |
| Shinjuku | 17:26 |
JR lists it as two trains with the same times, one for weekdays and one for Saturdays and holidays, so in the November 2026 timetable it runs every day. All standard-class seats are reserved. JR also sells a seat-unspecified ticket, which lets you sit in any empty seat; reserve a seat if you are traveling as a group or with skis.
Hakuba Station has no other train to Shinjuku. On Saturdays and holidays the limited express Hakuba also leaves at 15:21 for Matsumoto, on some days only. The local trains to Matsumoto are covered in my Matsumoto to Hakuba guide.
Getting to the bus stop or the station
- Demand taxi: Hakuba Village's shared taxi costs ¥300 a ride, every day from 8:00 to 17:00, between 93 set stops, booked in its app. It runs only from 8:00, so it is too late for the 6:30 or 6:36 bus, and it does not take skis, snowboards or luggage that does not fit on a seat. Book a taxi for an early start.
- Taxi: Alpico Taxi has a taxi stand at Hakuba Station. With skis or big bags, book a taxi the day before.
- Which stop: the bus calls at the Happo bus terminal and then Hakuba Station, so board at whichever is nearer your lodging. For the Azusa you need Hakuba Station itself.
Which one to take
- Going to Shinjuku, or west Tokyo: the Azusa 38. One seat for the whole trip, and you skip the change at Nagano.
- Going to Tokyo Station, Ueno or east Tokyo: the bus and the Shinkansen.
- Leaving in the morning: the bus and the Shinkansen. The 6:30 bus and the 8:10 Kagayaki 502 reach Tokyo Station at 9:32, while the Azusa does not leave until 13:43.
- Skiing on your last morning: the 15:50 bus reaches Tokyo Station at 19:12 with the Hakutaka 570, or the Azusa 38 at 13:43 gets you to Shinjuku by 17:26.
- Flying out the same day: my guide to Hakuba to Narita and Haneda covers the airport routes.
Skis and bags on the way back
- Bus: skis and snowboards go in the hold if they are in a cover. Alpico charges nothing for hold luggage, and you load and unload your own bags.
- Train: I have not found JR East's rules for skis on the Azusa on an official page, so ask at the station.
- Sending them: to send skis or a suitcase back ahead of you, see my guide to sending skis and suitcases.
Winter and fares
The times on this page run until November 30, 2026 (bus) and are from JR's November 2026 timetable (trains). Last winter, from December 13, 2025 to March 31, 2026, some Nagano – Hakuba buses were reservation-only and stops varied by bus. JR's pages are for its November 2026 timetable, so check both timetables for your travel date, and again before a winter trip.
- Delays: in snow, check JR East's train status for the Shinetsu area and leave spare time at Nagano.
- Fares: JR's fares were not on a text page I could check, and Alpico's fare table for the Hakuba-to-Nagano direction is an image. Check them with JR East and Alpico before you travel.
How I checked this
- I read Hakuba Station's November 2026 timetable toward Matsumoto, for weekdays and for weekends, and the Azusa 38's two train pages.
- I read Alpico's Nagano – Hakuba timetable for April 1 – November 30, 2026, in the Hakuba-to-Nagano direction.
- I read the Shinkansen timetable at Nagano toward Tokyo and picked trains with no running-day mark, then opened each train's page for its Tokyo arrival.
- For getting to the stop, I used Hakuba Village's demand taxi page and Alpico's taxi stand list.
- I worked out each total from the bus departure at Hakuba Happo to the arrival at Tokyo Station or Shinjuku. Sources: JR East; Alpico Kotsu; Hakuba Village
- Rail and bus fares for each route.
- The 2026–27 winter timetables for the bus and the Azusa.
- JR East's rules for skis and large bags on the Azusa.
- Direct buses from Hakuba to Tokyo.
I will update this page when the winter timetables are published.
